Day 24: My final day in Melbourne

I took some photos of the leafy part of St Kilda in which I was staying. This was the art deco building in which my Air BNB flat was situated.

This myna bird was following me down the street. I was to see hundreds more in the days to come.

Yes, Barbie has a new career as a cement truck driver!

This day I was heading for the city museum, but I took my time, so got there too late to make it worthwhile to go in. (It's not free!) No biggie, I browsed in the shop then went back out into the park in which it is situated. It was too nice not to be outside anyway!

The reason this photo is so blurry is because the mother duck was charging at me... I will add a video of this when I can locate it.

I found the fairies' tree!!!

I thought it was worth the trek. (The tree is right in the middle of Fitzroy Gardens, which is a pretty big park, but I think I walked right past it a few times.) But this person, who posted on Trip Advisor, didn't think so. I really don't know what she expected; why should her kid be able to climb the fairies' tree?!

“Nice park but fairy tree not for kids”

I traveled to Melbourne recently with a toddler in tow. We had already been to Fed Square playground and I was looking for something else that might be fun for the little one. The guy at the visitors centre in Fed Square told me that Fitzroy Gardens have a model tudor village and a fairy tree which I thought sounded perfect.

We walked the 4 or 5 blocks from Fed Square to the Gardens. It is a flat walk but nothing very interesting to see on the way. The model tudor village and Fairy tree are in the middle of the gardens and both are next to each other. Unfortunately they are both behind fences and there is no access. So you can only stand outside the fence and look in. I am lucky my daughter is not a bit older because if she understood that we were going to a fairy tree she would have been really disappointed when she couldn't get anywhere near it. She was happy just to get out of the pram and walk through the gardens looking at the Autumn leaves. I was more disappointed than her because I had just pushed a heavy pram with 2 kids in it several blocks for no good reason.

Of course Australian fairies hang with kangaroos...

And koalas...

I found some photos my mother had taken of this miniature village when my parents went to Melbourne in the 80s. It hasn't changed at all.

This, in the same park, is Captain Cook's cottage. It was moved, brick by brick, from England, in the 30s. I did not go in (it was shut) but my parents did, apparently.

The man himself. Looks like he's wondering why they went to so much trouble!

Diana and her hounds

The following morning, I hit the Great Ocean Road!
