Day 25: Hitting the Great Ocean Road

The first half of the highway that stretches westward from Melbourne toward Adelaide is called The Great Ocean Road, for reasons that are somewhat obvious! I joined an overnight tour that traveled in a minibus about the size of our New Zealand vehicle. Surprisingly it was the same guide/driver as I had for Philips Island.

We left early in the morning but it took a while to get to the bit of the road with most of the great ocean views. So first we stopped for a picnic lunch. And who did I encounter, hanging out at the cafe?

Around the corner... That's a male Australian King Parrot.

And in a tree at the side of the car park:

There were noisy parrots all around him, not to mention noisy people with their selfie sticks...

But the noise did not seem to faze him...

Though this koala decided to climb a bit higher...

This is a female Australian King Parrot:

There were also flocks of cockatoos.

A Pacific Black Duck:

And here's an Australian Magpie, showing us his frock coat with tails:

Time to get back on the bus...

No, this is not a cave, just the side of a sea cliff wall:

These are the Twelve Apostles, although there are not twelve of them.

It was kind of difficult to take the above photos of the sea. I had never seen such crowded viewpoints or paths along the sea in my life. The tourists were about 95 per cent Chinese, big bus after big bus. Many were dressed in evening wear and nearly everyone had a selfie stick. So hardly anyone was looking at the view, except in the viewfinder of their camera, which is impossible to see in the sunlight anyway.

So I strolled over to the other side of the path and took some photos of flowers...

Now we are heading away from the coast and into the Grampian Mountains, where we will spend the night in a National Park cabin. We also had dinner there in its big kitchen, and slept in bunk beds. Most people went to bed shortly after dinner but I stayed up a bit talking to a couple from Malaysia, where I would be heading after Australia...
