In the childhood activities section, butterfly collecting was prominently displayed. One of those photos would have been my dad, had he grown up on the other side of the world...
Some groovy mid-century modern furniture!
I particularly dug this chair. It would go so well in my bedroom.
This desk is pretty nifty, too.
Shakespearian marionettes!
Love this poster...
Time for some outfits:
As could have been seen at Downton Abbey...
Moving on to the natural history section, this frightened me of course...
Boning up on New Zealand boids...
And its Lepidoptera...
This was kind of impossible to photograph without reflection, but it's a lifesize model of the sadly extinct moa.
As you know I rarely take selfies, but I couldn't resist posing with this guy. It was hard to get us both in and I somehow have the same expression as the giant penguin.
After leaving the museum, I headed over to the Sky Tower, where I met my brother, Kurt, and most of the people who would be joining us on his tour, for dinner. The restaurant, which rotates 360 degrees about once an hour, is on the 52nd floor. An observation deck is on the floor below it.
The food was pretty good too; here's my main course:
This long exposure went kind of blurry, but I like the effect.
Farewell, Auckland!
It was an early dinner, so I decided to check out an ice cream place I had read about on the way back. It's on Queen Street near Wellesley Street and the Civic Theatre, and is called Giapo. You are given huge samples of as many flavours as you care to try. Some of the unusual flavours are served only on their own, or with a donut. I chose two scoops in a cup: avocado (the best!) and one I forgot the name of but was based on some sort of caramel cookie. This is a terrible shot, but as you can see, it was served with a huge chocolate cookie, nuts and flakes. Not only that, they then came round and gave everyone a small piece of cake and cup of the richest dark hot chocolate, for free.
Yum!
