Day Seventeen: Halloween with ghostly kiwis on Stewart Island

Dunedin was my favorite city in New Zealand. It is full of lovely gardens and quirky houses. Unfortunately, even though we spent the night there, we didn't have much time to walk around or explore the place, and it was frustrating to drive by so many interesting places too quickly to even take a photo! However, we were staying near the Botanic Gardens, and I hurried through breakfast so that I could spend half an hour there.

Grrr.. This spelling error of course irked me! but I liked the name of the shop.

What's going on in Dunedin...

We headed south once again, and stopped at a cliffside trail to a lighthouse.

Where we had lunch:

While I was waiting for my food, I ran down the road as I remembered we had passed something intriguing:

After lunch we had a long drive along the sweeping coast.

In the late afternoon we caught a ferry to Stewart Island, where we were to spend two nights at the South Seas Hotel. After dinner we went on a boat to the other side of the island for another go at kiwi spotting.

Once we disembarked it was totally dark and we had a longish trek through the forest. We came out on the beach and yes, this time we saw a kiwi! It was far too dark to get a decent shot. However I think these ghostly ultra long exposures are appropriate, as it was the 31st of October!
